Terminal Safety

ExxonMobil's research and liquefied natural gas (LNG) experience provide a solid technical basis for safe marine operations at the BlueOcean Energy terminal.

• Vessel motion and marine simulation studies have established operating wave and wind environments for LNG ships to safely maneuver and moor alongside the BlueOcean Energy terminal.  Purpose-built LNG ships with strengthened LNG tanks and mooring systems can moor in sea swells up to about 10 feet; conventional LNG ships in somewhat milder environments.

• At least four world-scale tugs, berthed at a local port, will assist LNG ships in approaching, mooring and departing from the floating terminal.

• A Safety Zone around the floating ocean terminal and LNG ships will keep other vessels at a safe distance.  The U.S. Coast Guard would have jurisdiction for enforcing the Safety Zone and any applicable restrictions.

•  The floating ocean terminal will be capable of withstanding the worst storm that could be expected in 1,000 years.  Its design will benefit from decades of industry offshore platform experience, including with hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.

We will also develop and implement emergency response plans for extreme weather, such as hurricanes.

We will work with the Coast Guard Captain of the Port to determine appropriate measures to ensure safe and secure terminal operations.
